This work functions as the centre piece for the installation. It is made to be looked up at, like a cross at an altar. The video depicts various shots of electrical towers, satellite dishes and public networking hardware (all filmed in Egypt).
The work is meant to bring forth the awareness that our digital media, texts, video and voice calls, emails and data that travels in general, all passes through physical spaces in the material world. These are structures that are often overlooked and forgotten in our daily lives, especially in a place like Egypt where it is the norm to see hundreds of satellite dishes just standing on your balcony and looking out onto the neighbourhood. However these large metal disks and towers, equipped with thick, heavy cables are what keep many of us connected to our cyberspaces and each other. With this video piece, and its positioning within the installation, I aim to make its importance visible, tangible, and beautifully framed, as if another part of our natural landscape, or as if it is religious iconography, to show the power and impact it holds amongst our lives.
